Section 4. Formulations

To be a “complete” nutrient solution, it must contain all of the 13 essential mineral plant nutrient elements. The major elements N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S are all required at relatively high concentration; plus the micronutrients, B, Cl, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo and Zn, elements required at lower concentrations. When not a “complete” nutrient solution formulation, it may include only one essential element or any number of the 13 essential elements. An essential element concentration may be less than what the formulation calls for as the rooting medium may already contain that element. Also the water used for making the nutrient solution and/or used for irrigation may have a quantity of that element sufficient to meet a significant portion of that required in the formulation.

The bases for most hydroponic nutrient solution formulas are derived from the two formula (one with and the other without NH4) published by Hoagland and Arnon (1950), the reagent list and preparation instructions given in Table 6. What most do not know is that these 2 formulations have a use component: one gallon of nutrient solution per plant with replacement on a weekly basis. If anyone of these parameters is altered, i.e., the volume of solution, number of plants, and/or frequency of replacement, plant performance can be significantly affected, a factor that probably isn’t fully understood or considered by those who recommend a particular nutrient solution formulation.
